Energy Poverty. Who is Left behind by the Energy Transition?
By ROBERTO BARRELLA
Our society, and specifically the European Union, is making a big effort in order to facilitate the path from a fossil-fuel based energy production system to a low-carbon and renewable sources based one. Nevertheless, the impact of this transition on consumers with low income and the situation of households that cannot afford the energy expenses required as a basic need are often forgotten. In this talk, we will explore how the concept of energy poverty tries to make this problem visible, how it is measured and the actions that can be taken to fight this social problem. In this context, it will be also presented the Chair of Energy and Poverty of Comillas Pontifical University, including its participation in the Spanish national strategy against energy poverty and in official EU reports and policies.
